Certain phrases have completely lost all of their meaning. “I love you”, I’ll call you”, and “I know how you feel” are some of my favorites. These get used without thought day in and day out. Why don’t people say what they really mean? This would look more like “I can tolerate you (sometimes)”, “I won’t call because I’m not interested” and “Stop whining about your problems”. I know, I know, feelings. If we really want to spare a person’s feelings though, it is better to be honest. They will probably notice that you don’t love them, you didn’t call and you have no clue how they feel.
The ultimate useless phrase that ticks me off is “How are you?” Nobody really cares, it is just the “polite” thing to say. If you think someone is really interested in how you feel, tell them. I guarantee they will never ask you again. The bottom line is this: If you don’t want to know the answer, don’t ask the question!
